The secrets behind hairdressing training in New Zealand

I so often hear other Wanaka hairdressers in salons saying how much they dislike hair ups and hair styling, let me tell you why this is such a common complaint.

When we go to hairdressing schools or do an apprenticeship the training in hair-ups is very very minimal, you learn to do a French roll and a couple of braids for an assessment and then when you do your final assessment you need to invent your own complex hair up to pass and that’s it. There’s not even training on how to create different curls with flat irons or a curling wand and because demand for hair ups in a salon is so low the amount of practice you generally get is minimal.

To get good at hair-ups you need to spend a lot of your own time practising because let me tell you hair ups are not easy and there are so many different ways to achieve each look or style and the right way will depend on the hair type and length, this is why practising on a mannequin can only get you so far.

Preparation is also so important and the way we prep hair has changed significantly in the last 15 years. Gone are the days of hot rollers and here are the days of product layering and flat irons.

There are many fantastic masterclasses that a stylist can take to get good at hair-ups. Some stylists skip the hairdressing training all together as they only want to specialise in hair ups and special event styling.

My advice when you're looking for a hair stylist for a special event or film and photo is to find someone specially trained in it, who keeps themselves up to date.

As well as my New Zealand National Certificate in Hairdressing, I have also completed online education with Polished Skills to perfect my techniques, up skill and remain relevant in the styling industry. I keep up with all the latest trends in styling by keeping a close eye on social media and what all the best stylists are doing. I have also completed extensive courses in the administrative side of this business making sure the booking processes are streamlined, easy to follow, understood and as stress-free as possible. My clients’ experience from start to finish with my business is my top priority.
